Veneers Can Give You A Memorable Smile

Jan 24, 2016

Do you want people to remember you? Then, you should smile.

And science proves it. In July of 2015, a group of researchers reported the results of a study of facial expressions and recognition.

The researchers asked their subjects to look at a series of pictures. Then the subjects were shown images of people who had been in the previous pictures. The subjects were more likely to remember the faces of people who were smiling in the first series of photos.

That’s good to know, but what if you are ashamed of your teeth? What if you are too embarrassed to smile when you are meeting people for the first time?

You can fix that, and the team at Total Dental Care of South Carolina can help. At our dentist office, located in Columbia, SC, we can use veneers to give you a smile that you will be proud to share.

Identifying Your Problem

Saying you don’t like your smile is one thing, but understanding why you don’t like your smile is something else.

If you don’t like the way your teeth look, what would you like to change?

The next time you have a chance, look at some photos of yourself or take a closer look at your teeth in the mirror. Which of these problems do you see?

◼︎ Your teeth are yellow or discolored.

◼︎ Your teeth are crooked.

◼︎ Your teeth are crowded together.

◼︎ You have gaps in your smile.

◼︎ You have teeth that are chipped or broken.

◼︎ You have a combination of problems (teeth that are yellow and crooked, or you have a gap in your smile and a chipped tooth).

The good news is that no matter your issue, veneers can help. We’ll explain more below.

What Veneers Are

Veneers are a shell that our dentist can place over your teeth.  Veneers are to your teeth what false fingernails are to your fingernails. There is one very important difference, however. Veneers can last for decades.

Veneers fix the things you don’t like about your teeth by hiding them.

Some issues, such as crooked teeth or teeth with gaps also can be fixed with years of orthodontic treatments. Or, you can use veneers to cover your teeth and change the look of your smile in a few visits to the dentist office.

Veneers have been used for decades, and today’s veneers look realistic and are more durable than ever.

With most porcelain veneers, the dentist starts by removing a thin layer of enamel from your teeth. The dentist then makes an impression of your teeth.

That impression is sent to a laboratory. They will use it to create a custom-made set of veneers to fit perfectly on your teeth. While you wait for you veneers to be finished, you may wear temporary veneers to help protect your teeth.

When your veneers are ready, you will return to our office, and the veneers will be bonded in place.

After you see your new smile, you may start taking “selfies” before you leave the office.

How Lumineers Are Different Than Other Veneers

All veneers are not the same, and Lumineers offers some specific benefits compared to other kinds of veneers. Lumineers are the thinnest veneers available for our patients.

The reason dentists remove a layer of enamel before you get porcelain veneers is so that your mouth and lips will retain their original shape after the veneers are placed.

Because Lumineers are so thin (around 0.2 mm), the dentist may not have to remove any enamel. This makes the preparation completely pain-free.

This also is good if you decide years from now that you would like to have the Lumineers removed. Because you still have the enamel on your teeth, removing Lumineers is much less risky (from an oral health standpoint) than removing other kinds of veneers.
